When we study the history of Jhelum, we get an Asian big historical place of 16-century Rohtas Fort ( قلعہ روہتاس‎; Qila Rohtas 1541-1548; Governance of Sher Shah Suri ). This fort is situated between the mountains, nearby the district Jhelum and city Dina of Punjab and covers approximately an area of 12.63 acres (51,100 m). where the Kahan river meets a seasonal stream called Parnal Khas.

The fort was complete within 7-year duration by the governance of Muslim leader Pashtun king Sher Shah Suri  (Sher Shah Suri) and its force between 1541 to 1548. And also died during construction on 22 May 1545 through the attack of Kalinjar Fort by fire ejected in the result of a gunpowder blast in his storeroom.

While development of the fortress walls two brothers meet after a period of 7 years­.  The main focus for building this building for defense from the Mughal empire. Most of the people visit there for its beautiful carving stone of different Islamic names. and for the museum of that time, that have different gates, wells, and mosque, temple of Hindu societies. that engage the visitors to our traditional leaders like Sher Shah Suri. and tell the story of wearier ( Mughal empire) of Punjab,

History of this HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM

The Rohtas fort is designed by the stone blocks on a top mountain. The fort height is round about 300 feet (91 m) above of its surrounding areas. Its founder was Sher Shah Suri (Sur Empir). Kila Rohtas is a plan of Punjab and follows the strategy of Afghanistan. purpose of building fort is to prevent the government of the Mughal emperor from India. And after a struggle of 7 years (1541_1548), it comes in to being. It is above on sea level from 2,660 feet (810 m)  and covers approximately an area of 12.63 acres (51,100 m).

Architecture ( HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM )

The architecture of This HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM was build in the Afghan-Persian style that draws from Middle Eastern, and South Asian artistic traditions. Afghans and Persians Kings had been developing to the Indian subcontinent for at least five centuries ere the creation of this fortress. Ere the development of Rohtas, the mixture of styles had been disagreeing. Qila Rohtas displays the initial example of the victorious mixing of those two styles, with the Afghan-style being more extended.

 Kila Rohtas cover an area of 70 hectares and enclosed by 4 kilometers of walls included 68 bastion towers with 12 gates. The fort is roughly a design of irregularly shaped of the triangle and constructed on a hill. The length of its walls is estimated 533 meters long which based on heavily strong guarded material. And also protected with deep forest with a lot of tries.

The fort is protected by thick defensive walls.

which heights is round about 10 to 18 meters. Soldiers of Sher Shah Suri protect this building through these walls from outsider forces and use these walls as their defense while action. While the governance of Suri number of solder is elected on a specific portion of these walls for fort protection.

Gate

Rohtas Fort is engaged with 12 gates and All of them are design by expensive stone of that time. These names are

1. Tulla Mori Gate

It was not a gate but also an entrance for the Fort. Its area is 2.13  meters wide and provide the way to enter into next gate of this HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM.

2. Sohail Gate

This gate of Kila Rohtas in rectangular in shape, and called as the name of Sohail Bukhari.

The measures of the gate are 21.34 meters (70.0 feet) high, by 20.73 meters (68.0 feet) wide, its depth from the fort is 15 meters (49 feet). The main feature of the gate is room it provides a room on the upper location of the gate which an outstanding look of more than one window. Which cover all the area of Sohail gate.

3. Shah Chandwali Gat

The link of this gate is with the main way of a fort. And also named as shah Chandwali. This gate is also a double gate. And used to inner and outer in the fort. This gate covers an area of round about 13.3 meters and depth is 8.23 meters. And provide access to further gates of this Building to visitors.

4. Kabuli Gate

and also used to inter in the MUSEUM set up by the Himalayan Wildlife Foundation. The main place of the Kila Rohtas for the visitor is a museum. That provides information of that time in the through different coins, weapons, defense tools, traditional books especially holy Quran and also sketches of leaders on the stones of that time.

 This gate was built into two stages and also consist of inner and outer gate and many people also call it Shahi (Royal) Darwaza.

5. Shishi Gate

This gate HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM is called Shishi for its beauty. And also an example of that governance art. This gate is made of tiles. Which color is blue. it was created by Shahu sultan  And was a great fort gate of that time. Which was later refined in Lahore.

6. Langar Khani Gate

It was a double gate which height was 15.25 meters (50.0 Feet) and 3.5 (11 feet) wide with the opening. It has a small window like the Sohail gate. And have a store, kitchen and well for water. The opening of this gate is in L shape. This gate is also called a mess or canteen.

7. Talaqi Gate

Heigh of this gate of kila rohtas is 15.25 meters and 13.8 meters wide with two bastions on either side. This gate deserves the name of talaq because of prince sabir suri used this gate for the purpose of the attack. The gate is regarded as a bad omen and after that name became TALAQI.

8. Mori or Kashmiri Gate

This gate is known as Mori or Kashmiri because it was open to the north and face toward Kashmir. And open one chamber to another chamber.

9. Khwas Khani Gate

History tells us that the name of this gate was named by the greatest general of sher shah Suri khawas khan marwat. This gate was the main entrance gate of killa. Because of this gate was linked with old GT Road. And also have a double gate. The outer gate is 12.8 meters wide and 8 meters (26 feet) deep. The gate have also defensive wall and also has a room on the top of the fort with different windows. which provide a view to the inside and outside of the fort.

It is related to mention here that when the Gakhars refused their loyalty to Sher Shah Suri, he launched an expedition to punish them. This resulted in the arrest of the Gakhar chief Sultan Sarang Khan and his daughter. Sarang Khan was then killed. His daughter was then married to Sher Shah’s favorite general Khawas Khan Marwat. ( Death of Sarang Khan )

11. Pippli Gate

This gate of killa Rohtas was also a small entrance gate like the Tulla Mori Gate. It is 2.13 meters wide.

12. Sar Gate

This gate is called Sar because of history says that this gate us use for getting water from a pond while the construction of This HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM . And also known as water pound. Secondly, it is developed by breaking an outer boundary or wall so it is linked with the jangle. And provide a way to the soldiers to enter into the Jangle.

Rani Mahal and Haveli Man Singh

It has 4 rooms, which height is 20 feet (6.1 m) and every room was round about 8 by 8 feet ( 2.4 by 2.4 m). the main quality of these rooms was its decoration. It was decorated with different flowers, fake windows, and patterns and also have an artificial roof.

Court of Sher Shah Suri and punishment place

Suri soldiers call all the area into this court on the horses. Suri hears the witness of both parties. And give punishment to someone on the sport. There are two types of Punishments given by Sher Shah Suri.

Royal mosque.

The fort has a mosque which is known as shahi masjid (Royal mosque). Which was near to the famous gate named Kabuli gate.

The Rohtas fort leader and solder use this mosque to pray their prayers. The quality of this mosque was that it was the most decorated and original building fo the fort, and its length is 19.2 meters and 7.3 meters deep. The mosque is divided into three rooms. And clean by a different servant before pray. Its outside walls were designed by different Islamic name which increases the beauty of the mosque.

The temple of Rohtas Fort is a Pure Hindu architecture. That was built on the separate side of the fortress. The Hindu of that time uses this temple for their worship. and put some expensive statues there. that was used for their prayer.

Stepwells

This HISTORICAL PLACE IN JHELUM is enriched with 3 Baolis. which was made by cutting deep into the lame rock.

Its depth is 135 and more than 400 steps of this well. The solder used this for taking the drink to their houres.

Stone carvings

History says that stone carvings are built on the gates and mostly on the mosque with different Arabic names and sunflowers. That increase the beauty of Rohtas Fort.

these carvings also design on inside the Shahi Mosque outside the Pesh Imam’s (Prayer leaders) room. The carving word “Allah” was in Arabic. That same thing was made on the Shahi Mosque.
